I enjoy White Lotus because Rich People Behaving Badly is one of my favorite genres. However, it’s never been a perfect show. Show runner and creator Mike White’s refusal to work with a writers’ room often leads to poorly developed characters (particularly characters of color) and missed opportunities to more specifically interrogate how privileged people’s individual actions and desires necessitate the marginalization of entire populations.
But that’s not what this essay is about. It’s about something far less consequential, and something a lot more petty.
When one of my kids is distraught about something completely not worth being distraught about, I’ll tell them they have a choice in how they expend their energy. I’ll talk about perspective blah blah blah. And I believe this! Which means that I’m deliberately CHOOSING to spend both time and energy on this shit-post. It’s a choice I’m happy to make. So join me, if you dare, in a little pointless analysis about a consistent theme in White Lotus that is not driving nearly enough people to the streets in protest.
