5 Pretty/Ugly Things

  • Lots of people are rewatching Girls. I watched the series “live” (is there a more accurate way to state this lol) and for the most part, enjoyed it. It was, of course, imperfect, but I love shows about female friendship, and I’ll probably never tire of art that probes the terrifying and exhilarating stage of young adulthood that is one’s twenties. But it wasn’t until

    Lynn Steger Strong
started her Girls rewatch series that I felt compelled to dive back in.

But also, how could Marnie have known that being object wasn’t the same as being subject? How is any girl supposed to understand when and how and why people are willing to want and value them on their own terms? How is any girl supposed to extricate herself from the world’s terms enough to even understand what her terms are?

  • Now listen, there’s nothing my online-shopping addicted self likes to search for than the Perfect ______, the Last _______ you’ll ever buy, the Holy Grail of _______. So naturally, that means I’ve tried many white tees. I wear white tees almost daily - they’re my go-to base layer for my super cool minimalist wardrobe. And most of them are not quite right. Some are too sheer (Madewell, I’m looking at you). Some don’t have enough give. Some have necks that are too high. Some are too boxy. Some are too long. Some are too tight. Some are too loose. YOU GET IT. But I THINK I’ve found a t-shirt that’s airy yet substantial (what?!). That hits at the perfect point so you don’t have to tuck it in yet doesn’t feel like your tween’s crop top. That is a lovely soft shade of white that isn’t muddy OR a blinding shade of Tom Cruise tooth veneer. Here it is.
