The new show I can't stop raving about
Plus cracker drama, feminist board books, and good news about bad moms
I recently gobbled up the entire first season (I hope hope hope there will be a second!) of Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and I can’t stop begging everyone I know to watch it so we can discuss. There are SO MANY things to love about this show.
Both leads (Maya Erskine and Donald Glover) ooze charisma and I could watch either of them read a menu from California Pizza Kitchen and feel creatively satisfied.
Each episode provides White Lotus level escapism. We’re talking Lake Como, we’re talking fancy European ski resorts, we’re talking black tie affairs with pretty clothes.
Speaking of clothes, I want everything Maya Erskine wears. The relaxed button-downs. The wide leg trousers. The gorgeous silk slip dress she wears to the farmer’s market (shout-out for braless representation AND small boob representation!) A gorgeous set of crimson pajamas (if you know where they’re from PLEASE SHARE). It’s all beautiful and all looks luxuriously comfortable.
It’s a special show that gives you fun James Bond escapades WHILE ALSO brilliantly providing commentary on the complex interplay of trust, vulnerability, and self-preservation that make up all relationships. It’s simultaneously frothy fun and also makes you think about and reflect upon your own lifeeeeeee.
Holy shit the guest stars! Parker Posey! Sarah Paulson! Michaela Coel! And so many more equally delightful actors I will let you be surprised by if you watch it (if you watch episode 4, please message me so we can talk about a certain scene that involves Parker Posey and a helicopter).
THE INTERIORS. The colors. The textures. The lighting. The brownstone fantasy of it all.
Oh hello THE FEMININE GAZE.
The food! Lots of it and all of it delicious looking. Extra points because Donald Glover’s character makes most of it and Maya Erskine eats most of it.
The analysis of gender dynamics and power!
It’s been a while since I felt compelled to get up on my soapbox and evangelize something (most recently it was menstrual cups), and I have to say, sometimes it feels good to love something so much you simply MUST PREACH.
Tell me! What’s something you currently love that everyone in your life wants you to shut up about?
Five Pretty/Ugly Things
Another maddening story of a woman’s pain being dismissed.
