The only time I can remember being actively targeted by an MLM was when I was a broke college student in Boston, which is quite possibly one of the worst times to be sold on the dubious benefits of a $38.00 Arbonne face wash. A friend of a friend invited a gaggle of us to her apartment in Somerville and I think we basically played with makeup for an hour over glasses of lukewarm Yellow Tail chardonnay and the type of cheddar cheese that comes pre-sliced. I remember being impressed about the supposedly superior ingredients in Arbonne stuff (and something faintly romantic about the Swiss Alps?!) but I bought nothing, nor did any of my friends. The “party” I think, was largely a bust.
It wasn’t until The Dream came out and I obsessively binged it within a week that I a) had a full understanding of what MLMS actually are, and b) sought out any and all MLM content I could find. If you haven’t listened yet, I’m deeply jealous. IT IS SO GOOD.
