Last night we had a little baby tornado swoop by real quick. Was it an actual tornado? Unclear. All I know is that there was definitely a tornado warning leading up to things feeling mildly apocalyptic for a solid five minutes as winds tore through the trees and the heavens pelted us with hail. Which I find SO COOL. The hail, I mean. Not the two out of three kids shrieking in terror.

hail! such wild shapes!

We lost power, and while we have a generator and were fine, we could NOT access Netflix, a modern tragedy. The big kids dealt with this by playing a video game. The little kid dealt with this by going to sleep. Which only left Brett and I, sitting in our habitual couch nests and wondering how we’d survive an entire evening sans TikTok dance cult documentary.

Aside from TV, Brett and I don’t necessarily love the same downtime activities. He likes cute animal Instagram reels, artsy music videos shot in one take on the streets of Paris, and leaf blowing. I like Scrabble, puzzles, books, and rock wall building. It’s easy enough to come together outside, but we’re VERY different indoor cats.

But I’m here to report that we had a fucking delightful evening - doing the most random of activities.

So if you too find yourself being cut off from the lifeblood of streaming entertainment against your will, or if you just feel like trying something new and totally wild (jk what we did was not remotely in the realm of wild), here’s my hottest of hot tips for a bizarrely fun night at home. Sans Bridgerton.
