5 Instagram accounts that make my life better
Including the best thing online my husband ever showed me
I famously have a fraught relationship to Instagram both because I’m alive in 2024 and because I think and write so much about social media’s impact on selfhood, community, gender, politics, and shopping habits. If you’d like to dip into my ever evolving, usually messy feelings, definitely check out Momfluenced (paperback coming in mere DAYS!) and/or peruse this incomplete archive!
Much (or most) of my deadeyed scrolling fills me with shame and regret, and I generally think that 20 minutes staring at the clouds or even at a wall (if it’s a pretty paint color!) is superior to 20 minutes on Instagram, BUT here are 5 accounts that unequivocally contribute to my life in wonderfully uncomplicated, positive ways.
5 Pretty/Ugly Instagram Accounts
A MILLION YEARS AGO, I wrote a satirical little essay about pregnant goddesses for a literary magazine that no longer exists and
was my editor. Since then, I’ve followed her career and felt lucky to have crossed paths with her (I’ve also commissioned some art from her and always always always get compliments on it). She’s a writer, a teacher, an artist, and a beautiful person. Her Instagram celebrates what it is to be human.I’ve written before about one of my weirdest and most beloved hobbies (I’d devote my life to it if possible and I AM COMPLETELY SERIOUS), and one of my greatest desires is to mudlark on the Thames thanks to this Instagram account.
